In Memoriam: Maria Sibylla Merian

Heute ist der dreihundertste Todestag von Maria Sibylla Merian. Sie war eine aussergewöhnliche Frau, Naturforscherin, wissenschaftliche Zeichnerin und Künstlerin. Ihre Insekten und Pfanzenbilder sind weltberühmt. Sie war mutig und machte was sie wollte. So reiste sie nach Surinam um die Insektenwelt zu erforschen. In ihren Bildern dokumentierte sie, dass aus Raupen Schmetterlinge werden, was damals weitgehend unbekannt war.

Today is the tercentenary of Maria Sibylla Merian’s death. She was an extraordinary woman, naturalist, scientific illustrator, and artist. Her pictures of insects and plants are world-famous. She was courageous and did what she wanted. She traveled to Suriname to study the world of insects. She documented in pictures that caterpillars develop into butterflies, a fact that was largely unknown at that time.

Seevogelkunst – Seabird painting

Kunst ensteht im Auge des Betrachters. Dieser Gedanke schoss mir durch den Kopf als ich diese beklecksten Felsen an Küste von La Lolla gesehen habe: „Seevogelkunst“.

Künstlertinte – Artist’s ink

Bei einem Kunstwerk kommt es nicht nur darauf an, wie es aussieht, sondern auch auf das verwendete Material. Auf der Landesgartenschau in Schwäbisch Gmünd traf ich einen Künstler, Alfred Bast, der natürliche Tinte aus dem Schopftintling verwendet. Bei einem Bild hat er die Pilze zerquetscht und die Tinte in das Papier wandern lassen. Eine wirklich kreative Idee, finde ich.

With a piece of art it is not all about how it looks like, also the material matters. At the state horticultural show in Schwäbisch Gmünd I met an artist, Alfred Bast, who used natural ink from the shaggy manes. At one picture he squeezed the mushrooms and allowed the ink to migrate into the paper. What a creative idea!

Nebelmeer – Sea of fog

Schönes Herbstwetter in der Schweiz bedeutet Hochnebel über dem Mittelland. Wenn man von einer Bergspitze im Jura in Richtung Süden schaut, sieht man ein richtiges Nebelmeer über welches am Horizont die Alpen herausragen. Das Nebelmeer erinnert mich an ein berühmtes Gemälde von Caspar David Friedrich, dem wahrscheinlich bedeutendsten deutschen Maler der Romantik. Das Bild wurde vor einigen Jahren als Briefmarkenmotiv in Deutschland ausgewählt.

Fair weather in the fall in Switzerland is characterized by high fog above the Swiss Central Lowlands (Swiss midlands). When looking southwards from one of the peaks of the Swiss Jura Mountains you see a real sea of fog and the Swiss Alps on the horizon. The sea of fog reminds me of a famous oil painting of Caspar David Friedrich, probably the most important German Romantic painter. The painting has the title: „Wanderer above the Sea of Fog“ (also known as „Wanderer above the Mist“). Some years ago this picture has been chosen as stamp motif in Germany.
