Wie aus der Spottdrossel eine Nachtigall wurde – How the Mockingbird Became a Nightingale

Die nördliche Spottdrossel ist der namensgebende Vogel in Harper Lee’s berühmten Roman „To Kill a Mockingbird“. Sie imitiert künstlerisch die Stimmen anderer Vögel. Verliebte Junggesellen singen auch mitten in der Nacht und können die Nachtruhe stören. Aber es gilt als ein moralisches Verbrechen, eine Spottdrossel dafür zu töten. Als man den Roman ins Deutsche übersetzte, wurde aus der Spottdrossel eine Nachtigall („Wer die Nachtigall stört“). Die Nachtigall ist nämlich der einzige Vogel in Mitteleuropa, der auch so schön in der Nacht singt. Harper Lee ist letzte Woche (19. 2. 2016) gestorben. Möge sie in Frieden ruhen. Hoffentlich kann sie den nächtlichen Vogelgesang hören.

The northern mockingbird is the eponymous bird of Harper Lee’s famous novel „To Kill a Mocking Bird. It imitates artistically the songs of other birds. Bachelors in love are singing also in the deep of the night and may disturb sleep. However, it is a moral crime to kill a mockingbird for this reason. When the novel was translated into German, the mockingbird became a nightingale („Who disturbs a nightingale“), since the nightingale is the only bird in Central Europe that sings so beautifully in the night. Harper Lee died last week (February 19, 2016). R. I. P. Let’s hope she can hear the nocturnal bird songs.

Super-Vollmond – Supermoon

Gestern Nacht war ein sogenannter „Super-Vollmond“. Der Mond passierte seinen erdnächsten Punkt und erschien daher besonders groß und hell. Leider hing der Himmel voller dicker Wolken. Nur einmal, es war genau 03:45 Uhr, tat sich eine kleine Wolkenlücke auf und das ungewöhnlich helle Mondlicht erhellte das Schlafzimmer. Wie gut, wenn immer eine Kamera griffbereit liegt, auch mitten in der Nacht.

Last night it was “supermoon”: The moon was both full and at the closest point to Earth. A supermoon is larger and shines brighter than normal. Unfortunately, the sky was full of dark clouds. Only once, at 03:45 am, there was a transient small cloud hole and the unusually bright moon lighted the bedroom. It is fortunate to have a camera always handy, even deep in the night.
