Heute geht er zu Ende, der goldene Oktober 2015. Diese Jahr fand ich ihn besonders schön.

Steinäpfel – Medlars
Manchmal kommt es vor, dass ich draussen in der Natur vor einem Rätsel stehe, so wie bei diesem Baum. Zum Glück gibt’s Handykamera und Google, so konnte ich das Rätsel rasch lösen. Es handelt sich um eine Mispel, auch Steinapfel genannt. Im Mittelalter soll der Baum weit verbreitet gewesen sein, heute eher unbekannt. Man kann die Früchte erst nach dem ersten Frost essen, wenn das Fruchtfleisch innen verrottet ist. Es ist dann braun und matschig. Die Frucht eignet sich daher eher für Marmelade, es soll aber sehr gesund sein.
Sometimes I am completely baffled in the wild. This happened to me with this tree. Fortunately, I could riddle it quickly by use of my mobile camera and Google: it is a medlar. The tree was widely distributed in medieval Europe but is rather unknown today. The fruits are edible only when almost rotten after the first frost. Then the pulp looks brown and squishy. Therefore, the fruits are particularly suitable for making jam, but they are healthy.
