Tonnenweise Schnee – Tons of Snow

Nördlich der Alpen ist der Frühling angekommen. Wegen des geteilten Winters habe ich den Schnee extrem vermisst. Darum bin ich vergangenes Wochenende mit meiner Frau ganz in den Süden der Schweiz gefahren, ins Oberengadin. Dort gibt es trotz Tauwetter noch tonnenweise Schnee, wie die Bilder beweisen.

North of the Alps the spring has arrived. Because of the divided winter I missed the snow extremely. Therefore, last weekend I went with my wife to the very south of Switzerland, the Upper Engadine. Despite thaw there were still tons of snow as evidenced by the pictures.

Geteiler Winter – Divided Winter

In der Schweiz ist der Winter 2013/2014 zweigeteilt: im Norden viel zu warm und ohne Schnee, im Süden dagegen kalt und Schnee im Überfluss. Manchmal öffnet der Himmel einen Spalt, durch den man die schneebedeckten Gipfel der Alpen von den Hügeln im Norden aus sehen kann. Die Bilder zeigen den Blick vom Oberbaselbiet auf die Berge im Berner Oberland.

In Switzerland the winter 2013/2014 differs between the northern and southern part. In the north it is too warm without any snow. In the south, however, it is pretty cold and there is snow in excess. Sometimes the sky opens a slit which allows to watch the snowy peaks of the Alps from the hills of the north. Der Duft des Waldes – The Scent of Woodland

In einer Umfrage des Bundesamts für Umwelt (BAFU) im Herbst 2010 wurde die schweizerische Bevölkerung u.a. gefragt, welche Eigenschaft des Waldes ihr am meisten gefällt. An die erste Stelle in der Beliebtheitsskala schaffte es die Antwort: „wenn es nach Wald riecht“. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass die Leute den Duft des Waldes (noch?) nicht aus dem Internet downloaden können, und es auch kein App dafür gibt.

Three year ago the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) conducted a public opinion poll. One question (among many others) was about the most popular property of the forest. On top of the popularity scale was the answer: “when it smells of woodland”. May be this is because people cannot download the scent of woodland from the internet (so far?) and there exists also no app for it.

Jura-Gämse – Jurassic Chamois

In der Schweiz ist die Gämse ein typischer Bewohner der Alpen. Sporadisch kommt sie auch in den Hochlagen des Kettenjuras vor. Im tiefer gelegenen Tafeljura ist die Gämse dagegen selten. Für den Kanton Baselland schätzt man den Bestand gegenwärtig auf nur etwa 100 Tiere. Kein Wunder, dass ich nur alle Jubeljahre mal eine Gämse beobachten konnte. Gestern bin ich einem Hinweis aus dem Internet nachgegangen und habe diesen Gamsbock in einem stillgelegten Steinbruch entdeckt, nur etwa 10 Kilometer von zuhause entfernt.

In Switzerland, the chamois is a typical and common animal of the Alps with sporadic occurrence also on higher altitudes of the Faltenjura. However, in the lower Tafeljura the chamois is rare. A current estimate for the canton Baselland assumes that the total population consists of about 100 animals, only. Consequently, it is not surprising that I have seen a chamois very seldom, just by chance once in a blue moon. Yesterday, I pursued a hint from the internet and spotted this chamois buck in a disused quarry, only about 10 km away from my home.
