Sometimes, shy or reclusive wild animals show abnormal behavior. They learned to distinguish between dangerous and not dangerous situations. By offering eggs this stone marten could be trained to tolerate the presence of humans when sitting in a car. Two days ago, the marten must have been very hungry as it showed up at half past eight in the evening already to catch the daily egg. This way I succeeded to film the marten from a short distance. Despite knowing that I am sitting in the car the marten displayed transiently a cooperative behavior!

  1. I have noticed, living in the holler 24/7, that the animals get used to me and lose a lot of their fear, even if I don’t feed them. I don’t feed anything but the songbirds and hummingbirds. Most animals let me get closer and closer. I have also noticed that all animals watch me as soon as I step outside. You can see this with a tele-photo lens. The lizards, birds, rabbits, are all already watching me before I find them. I see the hawk across the valley in his favorite trees with the binoculars. He is very far away. When I find him he is already watching me. Am I the animal watcher? Or are they the people watchers?
That marten is beautiful. Great photos~

    • Thanks, Cindy, for this interesting comment. It is also my experience that wild animals know the people „in person“ who are regularly around. Often we can make pictures only because the animal tolerate us. A friend of mine even makes experiments speaking with wild animals, especially when they are young, and he had situation proving that foxes, badgers and roe deer recognize him by voice. It is quite clear that many animals are able to distinguish individual human voices. I also made the observation that foxes recognize the sound of the car engine. The nature is great!
